Inside the hand warmer is a metal element. To activate and release the warmth you simply bend the metal disc inside, the magic ensues and the hand warmer becomes solid and toasty hot. They will eventually cool down again but remain solid. To deactivate all you need to do is drop them into some hot water and the internal matter will return to liquid.
